Everyone of voting age has received some mode of political communication, via TikTok, television commercials, or the nice young canvasser at your front door. You may be surprised to hear that, though political communications professionals come from a variety of backgrounds, many U.S. schools offer undergraduate and/or graduate degree in this specific subject.
Political communication refers to the interactive process of sharing information among political leaders, the news media, and the public. Political candidates hire professionals to help them manage their campaign, articulate their message, write their speeches, and make their appeal to voters and constituents across television, print, the internet, and social media. Dedicated degrees in the subject trace back to the early 1990s, when mass media expanded beyond traditional newspapers.
Undergraduate and graduate programs in political communication will immerse you in both practice and theory. On the practical side, you will learn social science research techniques, journalistic methods, marketing strategies and analytics, electronic media production, and the basics of public speaking and debating and earn hands-on experience in the field. The theory side includes core concepts from political science, communication, history, psychology, and philosophy.
Degrees in political communication can take you a long way. Graduates get job offers from elected officials, political campaigns, advocacy organizations, media platforms, and marketing agencies. Other students choose to continue on to law or other graduate school programs.
